Actor Val Kilmer has oral cancer and “things don’t look good for him”, according to friend and fellow actor Michael Douglas.
At an event in London on Sunday, Douglas said Kilmer was “dealing with exactly what I had,” referring to his own battle with oral cancer, and that “things don’t look too good for him”.
There has been much speculation about Kilmer’s health since last year when he was reportedly taken to hospital and had been seen with a tracheostomy tube.
Kilmer denied the rumours at the time, saying they were “totally untrue” and that he had undergone a medical procedure which left him with severe swelling.
Douglas, who starred with Kilmer in the film, The Ghost and the Darkness, said that Kilmer’s illness had been the reason for the actor’s low profile.
“My prayers are with him. That’s why you haven’t heard too much from Val lately,” Douglas said at the event.
But Kilmer has pressed on with conducting publicity and promotions for his movie Cinema Twain, a cinema version of his one-man play about Mark Twain.
In a note posted to Facebook on Monday, Kilmer wrote: “Hope I see some of you out there on the trail!”
While not addressing Douglas’s comments directly, Kilmer also reprised the celebrated Mark Twain quote:
“‘The recent news of my death has been greatly exaggerated…’ MARK TWAIN. And his values and spirit live on even now! And I’m sure still standing!” he wrote.
CNN reported that Kilmer’s representative had not returned its request for comment.
