Hollywood’s actress of the moment, Margot Robbie, has used a hosting gig on US television show, Saturday Night Live, to campaign for gay marriage in Australia.

Robbie, who found fame alongside Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street and recently starred in Suicide Squad, wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the message “SAY ‘I DO’ DOWN UNDER”, alongside a rainbow-coloured map of Australia.

Robbie was guest-hosting the popular skit show at the start of its 42nd season, and wore the shirt for her opening monologue.

The campaign behind the shirt is linked to Australians 4 Equality, which works closely with the group, Australian Marriage Equality.

Robbie herself is not gay, but has enjoyed a high-profile friendship with popular British model and actress Cara Delevigne, who came out in 2014.

“I think that being in love with my girlfriend is a big part of why I’m feeling so happy with who I am these days,” Delevigne said in a 2015 Vogue interview.

“It took me a long time to accept the idea, until I first fell in love with a girl at 20 and recognised that I had to accept it.”

The Say ‘I Do’ Down Under campaign has been backed by Kylie Minogue’s boyfriend, British actor Joshua Sasse.

On the campaign’s website, Sasse wrote that he was shocked to discover same-sex marriage was still legalised in Australia.

“Let’s raise our voice and public support for change,” he wrote.

The same-sex marriage movement in Australia has stalled recently, after Labor announced it would oppose Malcolm Turnbull’s proposed plebiscite.
