The family of late Swedish DJ Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, has issued a statement implying he took his own life at the age of 28 after struggling with thoughts about “meaning, life, happiness”.
Bergling, a regular on the Billboard charts thanks to his massive dance hits, was found dead in his hotel room in Oman on April 20, with his cause of death ruled not suspicious by local police.
In the April 26 statement, obtained by Variety and translated from Swedish, Bergling’s family described him as, “a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions”.
He was “an over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress,” the statement explained, adding that he struggled to find “balance in life” after he stopped touring in 2016.
“He could not go on any longer,” the statement read.
“He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.
“Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive. We love you, Your family.”
Bergling battled health problems for several years prior to his death – he suffered from acute pancreatitis due to excessive alcohol consumption and had his gallbladder and appendix removed in 2014 after being rushed to hospital with severe nausea and stomach pain.
He was regularly credited for being a key figure in the rise in popularity of electronic dance music (EDM) in the United States and around the world thanks to the success of his breakout hit ‘Levels’ in 2011.
A police report on Bergling’s death is expected to arrive in the next few days.
