The Met Gala 2018 is here, and this is what we know: Amal Clooney and Rihanna are hosting the event from 9am on Tuesday morning (AEST), Kim Kardashian started a pre-event cleanse days out, and about 700 other fashion insiders and celebrities are counting themselves lucky to be invited.
The fashion world’s most exclusive event since 1948, the gala has a strict ‘no selfies’ rule and Vogue – which hosts the $US40,000 ($53,262) a head bash with New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York – keeps the guest list a closely guarded secret until the red carpet kicks off.
This year’s theme, ‘Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination’, will no doubt see fabulous interpretations and faux pas. But even A-listers who get it totally right will have to work hard to outshine those who have gone before and left a Met Gala legacy.
And the best of all was when the brightest lights from the fashion, music and acting worlds were joined by high society’s undisputed queen, Princess Diana, who wore a midnight blue Dior slip dress and chunky choker and gave the event royal cachet in 1996.
Here are our other favourite moments…
When Donald Trump proposed to model girlfriend Melania Knauss in 2004 but saved his celebratory smooches for daughter Ivanka.
When Solange Knowles made a short elevator trip a real downer for Jay-Z and turned Beyonce into a support act in 2014.
When pregnant Kim Kardashian interpreted the ‘Punk’ theme as ‘country cottage geriatric’ and wore what was universally called ‘the couch dress’.
When Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston got into an epic 2016 dance battle, exposing him to both comparisons of a madcap pantomime magician and the year’s weirdest romance.
When Rihanna wore an understated, quiet little yellow dress in 2015.
When Reese Witherspoon struggled with how to pronounce Cara Delevingne’s name during a lift ride after they met on the 2014 red carpet: “I don’t know what your f–––in’ name is.”
When Jaden Smith brought a wad of chopped dreadlocks in 2017 as a substitute for a beloved family member: “Since I couldn’t bring my sister as a date, I brought my old hair.”
When Madonna felt in 2016 that a leotard with cut-out butt was super edgy.
When Sarah Jessica Parker wore a singlet and knickerbockers in 2016 to THE MET GALA of all places.
When Anne Hathaway thought in 2015 that the theme ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ meant metallic Princess Leia.
When George and Amal Clooney made their Met Gala debut in 2015, and were, in a refreshing change from their usual down-at-heel style, elegant, appropriate and damaging to retinas with their innate good taste.
When Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds appeared to be CGI figures of perfection in 2014, especially when he rakishly touched her bottom.
When Miley Cyrus didn’t just get 2013’s ‘Punk’ dress code, she was the dress code: anarchic in a modern, polished way.
When Katy Perry’s 2010 frou-frou bordello dress turned out to be a mesmerising glow in the dark showpiece.
When David and Victoria Beckham misread the ‘Superheroes’ theme as ‘Super Serious’.
When Jennifer Lopez and P Diddy (although back then he was Puff Daddy) teamed up in the best gangsta way in 1999: White suit with a Hammer Time pant! Sunglasses! Fur! Acres of satin! Avoiding cameras on an actual red carpet!
When Stella McCartney and Liv Tyler gave a shoutout to their dads and pushed their music pedigrees in 1999.
When Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley were still a couple in 1995, and she thought she was actually Liz Taylor.
Time for some new iconic moments.
